Rekha Wuntakal (pictured), a consultant in gynaecological oncology and gynaecology, has shared her pride at coming second highest in the country for positive patient reviews on iWantGreatCare, a national website for patient feedback.

Rekha, who joined our Trust in 2016, said: “It feels really nice to be appreciated and rewarded for all the hard work the whole team and I put in. We have done the best for our patients during the pandemic, and everyone has contributed.

“We go all out for our patients and I find the most important thing is that you really have to listen. That’s when you make a difference, when a patient feels listened to and valued, and not rushed, no matter how busy you are. The human side, and empathy, is really important. I like to get to know my patients so I can do the best for them.”

Rekha was one of 22 clinicians at our Trust recognised with a Certificate of Excellence from iWantGreatCare due to their high number of positive reviews.

For Rekha, having had breast cancer herself ten years ago makes it easier for her to understand what her patients may be going through.

She added: “It gave me a different perspective as I know how they feel. Some people hear the word ‘cancer’ and they don’t hear anything else afterwards. That’s why I will often give them an appointment the following week after they are diagnosed, so we can talk once they’ve had time to understand it.

“The pandemic has been an especially difficult time for cancer patients, we had women who lost their husbands and were diagnosed with cancer in the same week. We also had lots of young patients diagnosed which was very challenging. Many were anxious, so we ensured we kept talking to them, kept reassuring them. The whole team has been amazing.

“For some, coffee gives them a kick. For me, it’s patient feedback!”
