George wins our You Made a Difference Award

George

George Atkinson, a healthcare assistant on Mandarin B ward, was our recent winner of our You Made a Difference Award.

George was nominated by Alexandria Taylor, a ward clerk on Ocean B ward, for the care he gave her brother while he was a patient at Queen’s Hospital. In her nomination, Alexandria said “George was on shift a lot throughout my brother’s treatment and really made a difference. He is so helpful; nothing is too much trouble for him.”

“He spent days and nights with my brother talking and joking and really picking him up when he was down.”

“As I work here George still finds the time to ask me how he is doing and is so genuinely interested in his health and recovery.”

George has been working at our Trust as a healthcare assistant for nearly three years and was inspired to work in healthcare after his sister was diagnosed with a brain tumour: “I knew then wanted to go down the healthcare road. I also wanted to make my mum proud- she’s proud of me anyway, but I think it’s important to have a good career behind me too.”

Talking about what he loves about his job, George said: “I enjoy seeing a smile of people’s face when you’ve helped them. They’re going through tough times; it’s good to uplift people. I also enjoy chatting and getting to know people and their families. I’ve good a great team behind me too, they’re all good people to work with.”

And George was quite surprised to win the award: “I was on my break just about to eat a sandwich. Then someone said “the Chief Executive is here to see you!” I was really shocked. But I think it’s such an achievement and I have the award framed.”

Outside of work, George loves travelling as has recently spent a month backpacking in Thailand. He also has an Instagram-famous Staffordshire bull terrier called Jim!
