During Mental Health Awareness Week, we have found out some more about the specially set up "Listen Hear" service for staff during the Covid-19 pandemic. 

Chandu Wickramarachchi, a doctor in our Emergency Department, has shared his experience of working in our hospitals during the Covid-19 pandemic, and how it has reinforced the reasons why he wanted to become a doctor. Read his account in his own words below.

With hairdressers closed and some people turning to the kitchen scissors for a trim, Riad Daher, charge nurse for neurosurgery, spotted an opportunity to help his colleagues feel good while also doing a bit of fundraising!

All our teams are currently working extremely hard as we, along with the rest of the NHS, tackle Covid -19. That’s why we wanted to give our colleagues the spotlight, as part of our In Conversation With interviews, to share what they’re doing and the impact on them.

Mariauxy, 31, is originally from Venezuela and usually works shifts in a busy restaurant in central London. When the restaurant she worked in closed down, due to the Covid-19 outbreak, Mariauxy was determined she didn’t want to sit at home. She joined our Trust as a healthcare assistant and has shared her experience of the role so far. 

The Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on every single department across our hospitals, and this is particularly being felt in our mortuary, which recently saw 16 colleagues redeployed from our pathology lab join the team.

Kate Baker, has joined our Trust as a much-needed healthcare assistant during the Covid-19 pandemic. Kate has a history with our Trust - she was inspired to become a patient partner after she was treated at Queen’s Hospital for a benign brain tumour in 2016.

We launched our Thinking of you service, a way for loved ones to communicate with our patients, in April, and since then we’ve seen what a difference it makes when patients receive a letter, a child’s drawing or a photograph.

We are sad to announce Onyenachi Obasi, one of our long-standing agency nurses, died last week in Queen’s Hospital.
