Is an apprenticeship right for you?

Sean Mossman

An apprenticeship is a paid role where the employee learns and gains valuable experience. It provides unique ‘on the job’ training, starting from Level 2 (the equivalent of GCSEs) up to Level 7 (equivalent to a Masters) allowing people to train alongside their role and earn a qualification.   Sean Mossman

Our Trust offers a range of apprenticeships, both clinical and non-clinical, with many of our staff having started their careers this way.

Workforce Services Officer Sean Mossman, who joined our Trust as an Apprentice Human Resources Administrator in July 2019, highlights his experience as one he’ll be “forever grateful for”.

He said: “I studied a Level 3 Business Administration Qualification for 18 months and was supported throughout by the Workforce Services team I was part of, the Education team, who I had regular catch-ups with, and Life-Time Training.

“It was a lot of work, but really rewarding. At the end of the course, after completing my assessments and submitting a portfolio, I was graded a distinction which I’m really proud of.”

Depending on the programme they will be completing, apprentices are employed for a minimum of 12 months on an initial fixed term contract. Once they have successfully completed their course, they are then made permanent.

Sean credits his apprenticeship for helping him be successful in his current role: “After my apprenticeship, I was offered a trainee role and having built a solid foundation of HR knowledge from my training, I became a fully fledged Workforce Services Officer for the Cancer and Clinical Services Division for the Trust.”

An apprenticeship isn’t necessarily just for those starting their professional journey either, with many being an opportunity to teach you new skills to help excel and progress with your career.

Sean said: “What I love about our Trust is that it is really supportive of further education. Our lovely Education team are always sending out enticing emails with lots of amazing further educational opportunities. I am definitely keeping an eye out for the next educational opportunity that would be the right fit for me!”
