Getting to Know Chemotherapy

Sara Turle

Sara Turle and Mairead Gray appeared in the film that they conceived Our Macmillan Cancer Information team has created a film to help provide support to patients who are prescribed chemotherapy as part of their cancer treatment.

‘Getting to Know Chemotherapy’ was made following an idea from two of our former patients, Sara Turle and Mairead Gray, who wanted to make a film using their experiences to help patients and allay their fears about chemotherapy.

The film, made by our Medical Photography team, was due to be released in March 2020, but the team spent the summer re-editing it as certain ways of working had changed due to coronavirus.

Alix Holmes, Macmillan Cancer Information Manager, said: “The film is an even more valuable resource now than when we were planning to launch it. Due to social distancing measures that are in place, patients can’t receive the same level of peer-to-peer support so this film acts as a way of them being able to get basic information at any time of the day or night.

“We’ve described what chemotherapy is and how it is given, as well as some of the common side effects associated with the drug. It’s much easier to receive that information from a former patient who has experienced it first-hand.”

Sara said: “It’s been two years in the making and, due to Covid, we thought it may never see light of day, so I’m immensely pleased it has.

“It’s been a labour of love for all involved. We’re extremely proud and just want it to make a difference for those going through cancer and chemotherapy.

“Everyone in this film has genuine lived experience of being a patient or health professional. This brings a very special authenticity and it is brilliant for us to be able to share our experiences to help others.

“I hope and feel that this will bring another layer of support, as patients currently have to attend treatments on their own. Hopefully it will be reassuring for patients’ family and friends who can't be there to support.”
