New A&E for Queen's Hospital

It’s great news we have secured the £42 million we need to transform the A&E at Queen’s Hospital. This is a landmark moment and means we can put an end to staff working in cramped conditions; areas overcrowded with patients; and reduce waiting times and the need for corridor care.

A new A&E will restore dignity, improve safety and create an environment for our teams to deliver the best possible care.

Our thanks to our MPs patients, communities, staff and for all of their support in getting us here.Illustration of the entrance of the new A&E at Queen's Hosptial

The amount of steps from the entrance to adults A&E will reduce from 335 to just 50!

Originally built in 2006 to care for 325 patients a day. We regularly see more than double that number who are seeking urgent and emergency care, with patients struggling to find their way round due to the rabbit warren layout and no dedicated waiting area.

Our modern, fit-for-purpose A&E will have dedicated waiting areas, better line of sight to monitor patients, improved ‘flow’ of patients as they move through the department, and more natural light.

We’ll have dedicated spaces for 195 patients in the department at any one time, as well as better provision for people with mental health needs. And for those using our Children’s service, we’re bringing the A&E and assessment area together by removing the corridor that separates them; we’re building a dedicated resuscitation area; and improving the facilities for those who need somewhere to decompress.
