Ward accreditation scheme

We are constantly striving to improve the quality of the care we provide at our Trust and this ambition lies at the heart of our purpose that we launched in September 2024:

“We want our hospitals to deliver care that staff are proud of and our patients are happy with”.

One of the ways we are achieving this is through our ward accreditation programme, which is a way to improve and standardise the quality of care we give to our patients.

The programme sets out clear standards and measurements to help staff understand where they are already delivering excellent patient care and how they need to improve.

Wards enrolled on the scheme work hard to achieve bronze, silver or gold. Senior nurses and other experts carry out the ward assessments.

The assessments highlight the strengths of each ward and they also identify areas for improvement necessary to achieve the next level. The assessments look at patient experience, safety, staff morale, operational efficiency, and performance in equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Jubilee ITU ward accreditation

Two critical care wards at Queen’s Hospital have been recognised for delivering exceptional care under our ward accreditation scheme.

The Jubilee Intensive Treatment Unit (ITU) has been awarded silver, while the High Dependency Unit (HDU) secured bronze.

The scheme measures performance across a number of key areas including patient safety, staff wellbeing, leadership, equality and inclusion, and overall ward efficiency.

Wards are assessed by a team of nurses and subject matter experts, who provide a detailed report and rate performance as bronze, silver or gold.

Practice Development Nurse Abigail Bakasa from Jubilee ITU said:

Everyone has done really well. This silver award proves to patients that when they come in, they get an excellent standard of care and we’re going to keep improving on this by going for gold.

Ruth Dando, Lead Nurse for Critical Care Services, praised staff on the HDU for all their teamwork.

She said:

Working in critical care is incredibly demanding and this bronze award shows the professionalism and compassion shown by our staff every day.

Congratulations to both wards on their achievements!
