‘Never without a smile’: Family thanks cancer nurse

One of our cancer nurses has been praised for helping a patient who was in significant pain due to cancer.
Karen Harford, Clinical Nurse Specialist for our enhanced support team, co-ordinated care for a patient who had some health complications and was in significant pain.
The patient’s family contacted the enhanced support team and Karen suggested they came in the next day. The family was impressed with Karen’s degree of urgency in helping the patient.
As soon as the family arrived, Karen was on the ball and arranged observations and tests to be done to find the cause of the pain.
Once the results were in, Karen organised a treatment plan for the patient and they were admitted onto the ward where they stayed for four days receiving fluids and medication to improve their pain and health complications.
In a letter to our CEO, Matthew Trainer, the patient’s brother said:
I watched Karen for several hours whilst in the ward and she never once approached a bed without a smile on her face.
“We’re at the beginning of a very long journey but if we come across a few more characters like Karen, I am sure that it will be made all the more bearable for us.
After reading the letter, Karen’s colleagues nominated her for a You Made a Difference award.
If you know someone who has made a difference in our hospitals, then you can nominate them for our You Made a Difference award.
