Working together to speed up cancer diagnosis

Our Finance and Cancer teams won a healthcare value award at the Healthcare Financial Management Association Awards (HFMA) 2025 for their hard work and collaboration on improving our care for cancer patients.
Early diagnosis is crucial to improve survival chances and as part of the NHS long term plan, the main goal for cancer diagnosis is a detection rate of 75% by 2028.
Analysis by our teams showed the cost of managing patients with early stage cancer (stage 1 or 2) is around 50% less than managing patients with late stage cancer (stage 3 and 4).
This analysis will shape the development of our new cancer strategy, meaning we’ll be able to prioritise diagnostics with one-stop shop approaches, increasing the focus on prevention like healthy lifestyle choices and screening.
Our Cancer Clinical Lead, Sas Banerjee, said:
I’m proud that this important work between our Finance and Cancer teams has been recognised. This will lead to better outcomes and experiences for our patients and we are developing strategies to prioritise diagnosis of cancer at early stages.
Our Deputy Chief Finance Officer, Petra Scantlebury, added:
Our research into economic benefits of early diagnosis has highlighted the value for both patients and the NHS.
“Collaborating with the Cancer team was vital to make these improvements and I’m proud of this achievement.
