More than 180 people waiting for their first urology appointment were seen in a single day on Saturday 28 February, as staff worked through a busy weekend clinic to help bring down waiting times.

The clinic focused on reducing the backlog by bringing people in sooner so we could see as many patients as possible.

Patients who needed surgery could have their pre‑operative checks completed on the same day, meaning fewer trips back and forth to hospital and a faster route to treatment.

Urology looks after patients with problems with their kidneys, bladder and the urinary system.

The day involved consultant and registrar doctors, outpatient nurses, pre‑assessment teams and admin staff all working side by side.

Patients were checked in, triaged and seen by a clinician for their review, and by the end of the day, 183 new patients had been seen.

Lewis Mambu, Urology Consultant, said:

This shows how innovation, teamwork and forward planning can directly improve patient access. We are very pleased with the impact it will have for our patients.

Tim Reynolds, General Manager for Urology and Ophthalmology, said:

I’m so proud of our teams working together and we’ll use what we learned this time round to make the next one even more successful.
