The robots are multiplying!

We’ve got two new Sentire surgical robots, doubling the number of robots for soft-tissue surgery across our hospitals and helping us get more patients the care they need, faster. Pictured above are members of our Theatre team with one of the new robots.

We’re one of the first Trusts in the country to use the Sentire surgical system and, thanks to a partnership with Cornerstone Robotics, we’ve been able to do so at minimal cost, paying just for the instruments we need and not the robots themselves. Pictured below are our team in theatre, about to perform one of the first procedures on one of the new surigcal robots.

Niroo Rajendran, our clinical lead for robotic surgery, said:

This is a milestone achievement for our Trust. Over the last decade, we’ve expanded our use of robotic surgery, bringing this high-precision surgery to more patients.

Robotic-assisted surgery uses minimally invasive techniques which can reduce length of stay and the risk of post-operative complications, while helping patients recover more quicky. It also gives our clinicians greater flexibility to select the technology best suited to each patient and procedure.

Adesewa Olaleye, one of the first patients to have her operation using the new Sentire surgical system

Mum-of-two Adesewa Olaleye (above), of Dagenham, was the first patient to undergo robotic-assisted surgery on one of our new devices. She had a gallbladder removal on Friday 21 August after a year of digestive   problems   and persistent vomiting.

Adesewa, 40, who is also a healthcare assistant at our Trust, said:

I waited around six months for my surgery after a scan in February found stones in my gallbladder. I was so happy when I received the call. Everything was explained to me about my operation. I was on top of the   world when they told me I would be the first, and my family were really impressed.

The team took really good care of me and I’m feeling well now.

We have a new Sentire system in the Elective Surgical Hub at King George Hospital, while the other is at Queen’s Hospital. They’ll be used for cancer and complex abdominal and pelvic surgeries, while helping us   increase high volume, low complexity surgery, reducing the time patients wait for their operations.
