Surgeons livestream less invasive ear surgery online

Surgeons at Queen’s Hospital livestreamed a training course to share a minimally invasive method for treating common ear problems.
The technique uses an endoscope camera to treat conditions through the ear canal itself without surgeons making cuts behind the ear they would usually make.
Patients at our Trust are already benefiting with a faster recovery and a reduced risk of infection.
Over the two-day course, which is accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of England, more than 30 doctors observed 13 live surgeries from our operating theatres.
This was led by a team of ear, nose and throat, (ENT) consultants including Gaurav Kumar, Ahmed Allam and Sachin Patil.
The course attracted trainees and consultants from across the UK, South Africa, the Middle East, Asia and beyond.
Muhammad Amin, an ENT Registrar who helped carry out the procedures, said:
This approach allows us to treat painful, long-term ear problems with less discomfort and faster recovery for patients.
To minimise disruption to routine care, normal operating lists ran alongside the course on day one. All patients gave consent for their anonymised procedures to be used for education.
ENT Consultant Gaurav Kumar said:
We’re proud to be among the few hospitals in the UK using this technique and sharing our expertise.
