We’ve carried out 14 transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) operations in just one day.

It’s the highest number of these operations we’ve ever completed in a day, and one of the most across the country.

TURP is a common surgery used to treat urinary problems caused by an enlarged prostate and the operations we carried out ranged from just 10 minutes to 45 minutes.

Adam Alleemudder, urology surgeon, who carried out the operations, said:

Completing superlists like this is a great way of pushing boundaries a bit, reducing our waiting lists and getting our patients their treatment quicker. It also showcases what we can achieve when everyone works together.

Operating is the easy bit, the main work is in the planning. It takes around four to five weeks and involves lots of different teams working together in the run-up and on the day itself. We had no complications with any of the 14 patients and the majority went home the next day.

These operations took place at our Elective Surgical Hub at King George Hospital, which our team has used to innovate and carry out high volume, low complexity operations to tackle our waiting lists following the impact of the pandemic.

This ‘superlist’ was completed during the hours of a normal working day thanks to the partnership work of our teams, making the best use of our resources.
