Orthopaedic Specialty Doctor given ‘I made a difference’ award after being nominated by patient

Mr Remadan recevies his award from COO Shelagh Smith

Reda Ramadan, Orthopaedic Specialty Doctor, has been presented with an ‘I made a difference’ award after a being nominated by a patient.

Mr Ramadan was praised for upholding the Trust’s PRIDE values when seeing the patient at short notice and taking time to talk through the various options for treatment.

The patient wrote: “Having some experience of hospital consultations, I find they can be rushed and as a patient you can feel you are not always involved in the conversation. You are usually aware that the doctor is busy and that other patients are waiting to be seen.

“Today was a very pleasant experience. Mr Ramadan made me feel valued as a patient while also respecting my own nursing background and knowledge. The PRIDE values of the Trust were most definitely upheld and fully demonstrated.”

Shelagh Smith, our Chief Operating Officer, presented Reda with his award yesterday.

He said: “It made me very happy to receive the award! It was a nice surprise because I didn’t expect it.”

On the importance of involving patients in the discussion about their care, he added: “I always try to explain to patients the different options about treatment and give them a chance to share their thoughts. Listening carefully to patients is important.

“I like to spend time with my patients and address their concerns, reassure them and give them all the options in a clear way so they can understand the pros and cons of different treatments. Each patient is different so it’s important to use your judgment and consult them to give them the best care possible.”

Reda says his wife was even happier than he was when he told her the news.

He said: “She shared it in our family WhatsApp group and I got lots of nice comments from our family.

“It’s nice to receive positive feedback and it encourages me to push and give the maximum for my patients.”
