New clinic to help those who are suffering with symptoms of the menopause

We’ve launched a new menopause clinic at King George Hospital, offering support to those who are suffering with complex menopausal symptoms, when other treatments have not been successful.

Menopause is a significant life event for many, usually affecting people between the ages of 45 and 55, and sometimes even earlier.

Menopause and perimenopause affect people in different ways, often causing anxiety, mood swings, brain fog, hot flushes, and irregular periods.

It is predicted that around 80 per cent of women will experience some symptoms, with 25 per cent describing them as severe and debilitating. A number of treatments are available for those going through menopause, with GPs often prescribing hormone replacement therapy (HRT); however, this is not always effective.

GPs are able to refer patients to our clinic if they feel they have tried traditional treatment methods, such as HRT, but have been unsuccessful in easing their symptoms. The clinic is open to give advice, treatment and support to those who need it most, allowing them the time to talk with a specialist one to one, tailoring their advice to their individual needs. Our first clinic on Wednesday 16 November saw six women; with the aim of helping more in our biweekly clinic.

Farida Bano, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist who runs the clinic said: “I have a special interest in menopause and am a member of the British Menopause Society. I think it is really important we are able to offer support to those who are suffering with the symptoms of the menopause, those who felt like they had no other options after speaking to their GP.”

Roopa Nair, Specialty Lead for Women's Health commented: “The clinic was launched recognising the vast demand and unmet needs of the women in our local area. It is not right that so many women have to suffer with symptoms which impact them daily, they deserve to feel supported during this time.”
