National survey shows green shoots of improvement

Chief Nurse Kathryn Halford

We’re pleased the results of the national CQC adult inpatient survey are beginning to reflect the improvements our teams have been making.

The annual survey asks patients staying at our hospitals for at least one night in November a series of questions about their experience.

In the 2022 survey, we’d improved in nine out of 10 sections with patients praising how we involved their families and carers and reduced noise on the ward at night, allowing them to sleep better. We’re also performing ‘somewhat better’ than other trusts in relation to asking patients for feedback about their care, which allows us to continually improve.

Other areas where we saw improvement include confidence in our nurses and doctors, as well as feeling included in conversations about their care; and respecting the care and dignity of our patients.

Our improved results have seen us move from the bottom 20 per cent of all trusts, into the middle 60 per cent of trusts performing around the same.

Kathryn Halford (above), our Chief Nurse, said: “While we know we still have a long way to go, it’s good to see that our work to improve is having a positive impact on our patients.

“We’ll now be focusing on areas where patients have told us we need to improve, including reducing waits for beds, more consistency of information shared with patients, and better support when patients are sent home.”
