Midwifery team provides continuity of care for pregnant women

We’ve launched a new team, Hera Midwives (pictured above), which is providing pregnant women in Harold Wood and Hornchurch with a continuity of care.

By seeing women throughout their entire pregnancy journey, including antenatal appointments in the community, the birth, whether in our hospital or at home, and postnatal care, our midwives can build better relationships with them, providing familiarity and reassurance.

Claire Mason, team leader, said: “Research shows that good continuity of care leads to better outcomes for new mothers, including reducing the number of stillbirths.

“We’re already finding the women we work with love having a specific team supporting them. At present, we have seven midwives in the team, with one vacancy to recruit to.”

This is the second team in our Trust focusing on continuity of care; we launched a team covering Upminster and Cranham in 2019. These are part of a pilot following the national maternity review, Better Births, which set a five-year forward plan for improving maternity services. While the pandemic may have caused delays, we hope to introduce more of these focused teams to other areas.

Our Hera Midwives have already supported six mums in welcoming their babies – their first birth was baby Athaliah (below with her proud parents), born in May.

Among our Hera Midwives is a mum who has already experienced the support of team leader Claire, who delivered Chloe Mulholland’s daughter five years ago – now Claire and Chloe are working side-by-side to support other new mums.
