Senior surgical colorectal registrar Fiona Cheung has been recognised for outstanding training of junior colleagues in surgery.

Fiona was nominated and shortlisted as a finalist for the 2026 Silver Suture award, one of the most prestigious awards in UK surgical education. The award recognises those who go the extra mile for their trainees and promote the highest standards of surgical education.

Developing her own skills and using her experience to support junior trainees, Fiona is helping to shape the care given to patients who undergo surgery.

Even though she didn’t win, Fiona was flattered and grateful for the nomination.

She said:

It’s important to help train colleagues as this improves the care that our patients receive so they get better outcomes. Our trainees gain key skills and experience in surgery so they can develop further.

“This achievement is a credit to BHRUT for the excellent training they provided me.

Fiona’s supervisor, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon Richard Boulton said:

Fiona’s compassion with patients, teaching and supervision with junior trainees and engagement with quality improvement is why she is well deserving of the nomination and finalist for this award.

“She has become the most experienced robotic bowel surgical registrar in the region and yet has the appropriate humility to be modest in her achievements.
