Celebrating 7,885 years of care at our Trust

Long service awards 2025 on grass

Long service awards 2025 on grass

We celebrated our long-serving staff with two special award ceremonies recognising colleagues who’ve worked at our Trust for 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40 years. Hosted by Chief Executive Matthew Trainer at the Kings Oak Hotel, staff who reached these milestones in 2024 enjoyed brunch or afternoon tea while celebrating a combined 7,885 years of service at our hospitals.  Matthew said:

“We get one go at life, and these colleagues chose to spend their working lives making a difference to others. They’ve touched thousands of lives through their dedication. On behalf of everyone at BHRUT, thank you for the lasting impact you’ve made.”

Claire Kimber

Among those recognised was Claire Kimber. She joined as a healthcare assistant 10 years ago, knowing she could train while she worked. Claire completed her nursing associate apprenticeship, then a nursing degree, and is now a registered nurse.  She said:

“Working at BHRUT is like a rollercoaster. There are tough days, but my work family keeps me going. I’m proud of the experience and opportunities I’ve had – from training on different wards to building my career here.”

Danny Lunda Ngandu

Danny Lunda Ngandu, celebrating 15 years with us, trained in the Democratic Republic of Congo before moving to the UK and joining our Trust. A Redbridge resident, he has a personal connection to King George Hospital – his daughter was born there.  He said:

“These 15 years have been a journey. BHRUT has helped me settle and become who I am now – it’s my second home. I’m so proud to be part of this Trust and want to help create a positive change.”

Fatmata Turay

Nurse Fatmata Turay, marking 20 years of service, came from Sierra Leone. She spent 14 years on the respiratory ward and now works in surgery as an advanced nurse practitioner.  She said:

“I started as a band 2 and today I’m a band 8a. It’s been two decades of helping people in need, and I still love caring for patients and supporting them through some of the most important moments of their lives.”

Sheila Sarsfield

Sheila Sarsfield was honoured for an incredible 40 years. She began as a volunteer at Oldchurch Hospital, typing up X-ray reports before becoming a receptionist in gynaecology – where she was known for years as ‘Sheila from Gynae’, and later settling in outpatients.  She said:

“I just enjoy helping people. I love interacting with patients and making their day easier. Everyone has always been so kind at the Trust – it’s why I’ve stayed for 40 years.”

Thank you to all our long-serving staff.
