1. Cataracts

The ophthalmology department at our Trust provides a hub for high volume low complexity cataract surgery at King George Hospital.

For patients to be considered for cataract surgery, visual acuity should be 6/9 or worse with a detriment to quality of life such as daily living, leisure activities, or risk of falls.

Please refer cataract patients routinely to the ophthalmology department.

Post-operative patients

Patients presenting with painful reduction of vision in the post operative period after cataract surgery should be referred urgently.

Please contact the Emergency Eye Clinic in hours by calling 01708 435 000 ext. 6662. For out of hours please contact Moorfields Eye Hospital on 0207 253 3411 and ask to speak to Emergency Department staff or call Moorfields A&E directly on 0207 521 4682.

Please fill in the urgent eye emergency referral form [docx] 17KB and email it to bhrut.urgenteyecare@nhs.net.

2. YAG capsulotomy

Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) occurs after cataract surgery in about 15% of patients by five years.

Symptomatic patients with PCO should be referred routinely for treatment with YAG laser capsulotomy.
