About us

Anatomical pathology technologist, or APT, is the title given to those who work in both public and hospital mortuaries to care for the deceased. The work they do is varied, but covers every aspect of caring for the deceased including technical support for the pathologists at post-mortem.

More information can be found on the Association of Anatomical Pathology Technology website. APTs and mortuary assistants both facilitate visiting appointments for families, as well as a number of other processes in the mortuary. All APTs are qualified with accreditation from the Royal Society of Public Health.

The mortuary at Queen’s Hospital is our main site and where the post-mortem examinations are conducted.

The mortuary is licenced by the Human Tissue Authority and was last inspected in 2022. More information on the Human Tissue Authority and Human Tissue Act can be found on the Human Tissue Authority Website .
