Bowel preparation for colonoscopy
If you are having a colonoscopy or in some cases a Flexible Sigmoidoscopy, you will need to take a bowel cleansing solution to completely clear your bowel before the procedure. The most commonly prescribed Solution is PlenVu. There are a few other alternatives that can be given depending on the patient and the circumstances, these are Picolax & Movi Prep. Your consultant & pre assessment nurse will ensure you have the solution that best suits your needs.
Bowel cleansing medications are flavoured powder that makes a solution when mixed with water to cleanse your colon. It has a laxative action, clearing the bowel so that it is clean and empty.
It is very important that you have a cleansed bowel for your colonoscopy so that any abnormalities in your bowel can be seen by the nurse or doctor performing the procedure.
An appointment to collect your bowel medication will be made for you at the same time your procedure date and time is agreed. At this appointment the nurse will explain how to take the medication and what to do and not to do leading up to your procedure. Medication & written Instruction leaflet will be given to you at this appointment. You can also find our leaflets below. Please contact the endoscopy pre-assessment nurse or the admissions team if you have any questions about taking your bowel preparation.
