Queen’s Hospital Education and Learning centre

Statement of Purpose

The Education Centre is a dedicated facility within the hospital, which will promote the concept of interdisciplinary learning, whilst maintaining the integrity of individual professional requirements. It will play a central role in enabling the Trust to maximise the use of its educational resources.

The rooms in the Educational Centre are not available for the use of meetings, which do not support or facilitate education, learning and development. Separate satellite seminar rooms support this need.

Staff will be able to access a wide range of learning materials to support their own professional and personal learning and development. This will be aligned to the aims and objectives of Directorates/Departments and the Trust as a whole to ensure that all members of staff have the necessary knowledge, skills and expertise to provide services to patients and carers and fulfil their potential. Opportunities will be made available to assist staff in achieving this goal.

The facilities include:

• Reception area with central booking system
• Lecture theatres with multimedia audio/video conferencing links
• Satellite seminar rooms for meetings and teaching.
• Clinical Skills Laboratory
• Resuscitation & Manual handling training room

King George Hospital - James Fawcett education centre

This centre is multi-disciplinary and therefore very active. We hold many departmental meetings including breakfast meetings for Cardiology and Gastroenterology. Lunchtime meetings are held daily in the specialities of Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics and Urology. General Practitioners attend the Centre for their educational meetings, which are held on Wednesdays and we have approximately forty local GPs who belong to the Redbridge GP education scheme. We run a Vocational Training Scheme for General Practice.

King George Hospital is an associated teaching hospital affiliated to the Royal Free & UCL and also St. Bartholomew’s & The Royal London Hospitals. 4th and 5th year medical students come to the hospital. We also have an Introductory Clinical Skills course for twelve 3rd year medical students twice a year.

We have many clinical attachments who do four week attachments with various Consultants. Normally these doctors are about to take their PLAB examination. After their attachments some of the doctors apply for posts within the Trust and are usually successful.

The James Fawcett education centre has a lecture theatre that holds 100 people, with multi-media and projection available. There are also 4 seminar rooms available with seating from 12 to 40.
