Many people head for Accident and Emergency if they are concerned by unexplained or unexpected symptoms. However there are lots of different ways to receive the treatment and the advice that you need. By seeking the right treatment for your complaint or condition, you could save a lot of time and worry.
There are different options available to you to receive the care that you need. You will also be helping your local Accident and Emergency department to see the patients that urgently need treatment as quickly as possible.
Please see below where you can get the best, quickest and most appropriate treatment for you. You may just be saving yourself from a lengthy wait in Accident and Emergency!

Disabled access
The unit is an integrated service for minor injuries, minor illnesses and health promotion by an appropriately qualified health care professional.
Access to a GP where appropriate and referral to other healthcare providers.
Minor Injuries include: Minor cuts and burns, Sprains and strains, Minor head injuries, Insect bites and stings, Removal of foreign bodies
Minor Illnesses include minor infections, sore throats, stomach ache, indigestion, constipation, vomiting, diarrhoea, coughs, colds, flu-like symptoms, women’s health problems e.g. thrush, menstrual advice, emergency contraception, skin complaints e.g. rashes, sunburn, head lice.
The centre does not provide repeat prescriptions, chronic disease management, follow up care, medical certificates, immunisations, vaccinations, or wound management.
Services are for everyone over 12 years of age, over 15 years for x-ray who can either just walk in or be referred by local GP practices.

Accident and Emergency
Do you need emergency hospital treatment?
Accident and Emergency departments are usually extremely busy. If you feel your condition is an emergency and is critical or life-threatening, then call 999 for an ambulance.
Please remember, however, that severe conditions are treated first so if your condition is not urgent you may experience a considerable wait.
Your nearest Accident and Emergency Departments are King George and Queen’s. These services are open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.
NHS Direct / NHS Direct Online
If you or a member of your family feels ill and does not know what to do, phone NHS Direct. Interpreters are always available. Skilled nurses are able to guide you in what to do next. NHS Direct also provides information on the opening hours of local services such as GP’s, dentists and pharmacies

Your local pharmacist or chemist can help you with a lot more than you might think - no appointment is necessary
Your local pharmacist is qualified to give you advice on a whole range of conditions. They can also answer any questions the medicines you are taking and can advise you when you need to visit your GP.
