Accident and Emergency

Do you need emergency hospital treatment?

Accident and Emergency departments are usually extremely busy. If you feel your condition is an emergency and is critical or life-threatening, then call 999 for an ambulance.

Please remember, however, that severe conditions are treated first so if your condition is not urgent you may experience a considerable wait.

Your nearest Accident and Emergency Departments are King George and Queen’s. These services are open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

NHS Direct / NHS Direct Online

You can phone NHS Direct on 0845 4647 at any time day or night for confidential health information and advice from specially trained nurses. Alternatively visit NHS Direct Online for a wide range of information at www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk. NHS Direct information is also available on Sky Interactive.

If you or a member of your family feels ill and does not know what to do, phone NHS Direct. Interpreters are always available. Skilled nurses are able to guide you in what to do next. NHS Direct also provides information on the opening hours of local services such as GP’s, dentists and pharmacies

Local Pharmacies

Your local pharmacist or chemist can help you with a lot more than you might think - no appointment is necessary

Your local pharmacist is qualified to give you advice on a whole range of conditions. They can also answer any questions the medicines you are taking and can advise you when you need to visit your GP.

Consult your Yellow Pages or local telephone directory to find out details of late opening and 24 hour pharmacies. Alternatively visit www.nhs.uk where you can find a list of all uk pharmacies.
