Staying healthy in the heat

Today (Tuesday) is forecast to be the hottest day of the year so far. It’s great to see some sunshine, to make sure we all keep healthy and happy there are some simple steps we can take:

  • Make sure you drink lots – preferably water

  • Keep out of the sun where possible during the peak times of 11am to 3pm

  • Use a high factor sunscreen – and take particular care with children and babies as they can be burned more easily. Remember to reapply, particularly after swimming – even if it’s just a dip in the paddling pool!

  • Protect your eyes with UV sunglasses

  • Wear loose fitting, comfortable cotton clothes. A hat can also protect your head if you are outside in the sun

  • Never leave anyone, including pets, in a parked vehicle with no ventilation as they could easily overheat.

Hot weather can affect vulnerable people, such as the elderly or those with serious illnesses or long-term conditions much more, so do check in on relatives, neighbours and friends where possible during periods of extreme heat.

Akin Idowu, an Emergency Department (ED) Consultant, said:

“Sometimes advice on how to stay cool during extremely hot weather can seem a little obvious, but we must not forget that vulnerable people, including babies and young children, can be really affected by the heat. Make sure they are drinking enough fluids, and drink plenty yourself.

“We all like to make the most of what little hot weather we do see – and following this simple advice can make sure you enjoy it, but avoid overheating or suffering with serious conditions like heatstroke.”

Our EDs can become extremely busy during hot weather. People should only come to the ED if they need emergency care and can be seen much quicker by visiting their GP, walk-in centre or local pharmacy. Out of hours GP appointments are also available by calling 020 3770 1888.

More information about staying well during the heat is available on the NHS Choices website.
