Local paralympian opens our green gym

It’s just months before she heads to Rio to swim in the Paralympics, but Amy Marren, 17, took time out of her busy training schedule to officially our new green gym at Queen’s Hospital.

The outdoor gym, which has been funded by the King George and Queen’s Hospitals Charity, includes exercise bikes, a cross trainer, hand bike and leg press.

It has been put in place for our staff, visitors and local people to use, and will also help patients in their rehabilitation, overseen by our physiotherapists. Some equipment, such as the hand bike, is also more accessible for disabled people.

Amy, of Hornchurch, said: “It’s a great thing, there are so many spaces in Havering which could be put to use and this is tried and tested, you do see people using them.

“People visit the hospital daily so it’s a great place to have one and helps people to fit some exercise into their day. It’s much better than sitting at home.”

As for the rapidly approaching Paralympics, Amy added: “My training is going well and I’m really looking forward to it. It’s my second Paralympics but it’s still sinking in.”

We now plan to introduce a further green gym at King George Hospital.
